Five members stand before a wall of copied black-and-white portraits. Sora leads "Effigy", where grief turns into fury.
"Effigy" is an original song by Hagane Sakura 鋼の桜, blending 90s alternative rock, grunge, protest rock and post-punk into a raw and emotional track driven by clean chorused guitars, heavy fuzz, round bass, live drums and layered female vocals.
An effigy is an image or representation of someone.
The song explores the moment when the version of yourself created by others no longer feels like you.
It may carry your face. It may carry your name. But it does not define who you are.
Led by Sora’s fragile and expressive voice, "Effigy" moves from intimate, restrained verses into explosive distorted choruses. Her breathy delivery gradually gives way to powerful chest vocals as grief transforms into frustration, resistance and fury.
Effigy, effigy / Straw in the sleeves of me
Lyrics
Verse 1 0
Three in the morning, the mirror bulbs on
Hairspray still hanging in the air
The dress and the hair on their own two stands
A cross of grey tape where the feet are to go
And a name on the door in white

Pre-Chorus 1 1
They cut it to fit
They pin it, they steam it
They ask me for nothing
So nothing gets asked
Hold the hand up
Hold the hand still
Chorus 1 1
Effigy, effigy
Straw in the sleeves of me
Waving the way they taught the hand
Ef-fi-gy-y-y
Post-Chorus 1
Ah-ee-ah, ah-ee-ah
Ah-ee-ah, ah-ee-ah
Ah-ee-ah-ah
Verse 2 2
Back of the room there's a box with a face
Someone they folded away
Same dress, let out an inch at the waist
They peeled up her mark and they pressed mine down
And the floor never noticed the change
Pre-Chorus 2 2
They cut it to fit her
They pinned it, they steamed it
They asked her for nothing
So nothing was asked
Hold the hand up
Hold the hand still
Chorus 2 3
Effigy, effigy
Straw in the sleeves of her
Waving the way it always waved
Ef-fi-gy-y-y
Carry it, carry it
Paper and glue and her
Down every street till the paper gives
Ef-fi-gy-y-y
Same tape, same tape
Ef-fi-gy-y-y
Post-Chorus 2 3
Ah-ee-ah, ah-ee-ah
Ah-ee-ah-ah
